Welcome

Welcome to the all-new Settlement Singers website. We hope you like our new look for the 2008 concert season and hope that you are able to join us at our many concerts and functions that are already scheduled and would encourage you to drop by the website from time to time to keep up on new concert listings and news.  You will find the most useful links listed above and some secondary links listed below.  If there is ever anything you would like to see added to the website, please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to include what information is requested.

Well, all that remains is to thank you for visiting The Settlement Singers website.  We hope that you enjoy your time here exploring who we are, what we do and where we want to go.

The Settlement Singers at Derby Cathedral
23rd February 2008

The Choral Evensong Service was the first Evensong Service the Choir ever participated in.  It went so well that Derby Cathedral has invited us back in May.

Keep looking at our Concerts page to find out the exact date once it is confirmed with the Cathedral

Thank you so much to all those in attendance.  Your support is appreciated.

Our organist Shaun Brown at the Derby Cathedral Main Organ

Shaun is a superb organist and musician and really made our Choral Evensong Service special.  Shaun is currently an Organ Scholar at Wakefield Cathedral and has been on BBC Radio 4's Choral Evensong many times in the past.

Thanks Shaun for all your hard work on our behalf.

Our History

The Settlement Singers were formed in January 2006 by Greg Maskalick and continue to rehearse and perform today.  The choir has been set up to be Ockbrook and Borrowash's own Community Choir that everyone in the Ockbrook and Borrowash area can take great pride in.  Members of the choir come from further afield (Ilkeston, Spondon, Nottingham) and the age range is from 17 to - well, we don't like to say.  But, what we are trying to say is that the choir is open to all of any age, any singing ability and from any geographic location.  There has never been a subscription fee for members either.  Being part of The Settlement Singers is free to all.

We meet on a Monday evening at Ockbrook Moravian Church to rehearse.  The choir works very hard and now has an extensive repertoire of about 35 pieces of music ranging from madrigals to show tunes and everything in between.  The choir finally got around to celebrating its first year a little bit late (October 2007) and had a great 1st Anniversary Concert at Ockbrook Moravian Church.  This year the Choir will finally catch up with itself and have a 2nd Anniversary Concert in April 2008.

Each year the Choir performs at the annual Ockbrook & Borrowash Community Christmas Concert at Ockbrook Moravian Church along with Ockbrook and Borrowash's own Nelson Handbell Ringers.  Look for this again in December 2008 for the 3rd Annual  Ockbrook & Borrowash Community Christmas Concert.

The choir has also sung outside of Ockbrook and Borrowash, and this year will be going back to Morley Church and to new locations as well.  We are all very excited to be performing at Derby Cathedral for Evensong service in February 2008 and at St Osmund's, Derby and Losco Church.  The choir would like to perform at any event locally or further afield and has never charged a fee for their services.

Currently there are only two staff members of The Settlement Singers and they are the founding member and Musical Director Greg Maskalick and our fine accompanist Paul Mitchell.  It is hoped that as membership increases we will be able to have a proper Choir committee.
